Canairi: A Playful Solution for Indoor Air Quality Monitoring

Intuitive Design Encourages Healthy Living

We spend 90% of our time indoors in developed countries, and poor indoor air quality can lead to various health issues. Canairi, designed by Hans Augustenborg, is an innovative indoor air quality monitor that combines functionality with a playful and intuitive design.

Canairi draws inspiration from the old practice of using canaries in coal mines to warn miners of poor air. Just like the canaries, Canairi serves as a visual indicator of indoor air quality. When the air quality becomes poor, Canairi drops down, signaling the need for ventilation. Opening the windows and improving the air quality causes Canairi to rise back up, indicating a healthy environment.

The design of Canairi is minimalistic yet playful, making it easy for both children and adults to understand. The bird-shaped monitor features loose joints in its wings, allowing them to swing when it falls down. This simple and engaging interaction encourages users to take action and improve their indoor air quality.

Canairi is equipped with a CO2 sensor connected to an algorithm that correlates with recommended levels set by health authorities worldwide. The monitor is made of recycled plastics, promoting sustainability, and comes with a rechargeable battery and a wall-mount for easy installation.

Unlike other air quality monitors, Canairi does not rely on light, sound, or phone notifications to alert users. Instead, it utilizes storytelling and gamification as nudging mechanisms to encourage intuitive action. By combining a minimalistic design language with bright colors and playful form-giving, Canairi seamlessly integrates into contemporary homes.

The development of Canairi involved extensive research and collaboration. The design team consulted behavioral design experts and conducted surveys to understand the general knowledge about indoor air quality and the willingness to improve it. Students from the Danish Technical Institute and the Danish School of Media and Journalism also contributed to the project, ensuring a well-rounded approach.

Canairi is set to launch in the market in the second quarter of 2022. Its unique combination of functionality, intuitive design, and sustainability has already been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Home Appliances Design category. This prestigious accolade acknowledges Canairi's well-designed, practical, and innovative nature, contributing to a better and healthier world.

With Canairi, monitoring indoor air quality becomes an engaging and enjoyable experience. It not only raises awareness about the importance of ventilation but also promotes a healthier lifestyle for individuals and families.
